10 Observations: Blackhawks Fall to Flyers in Chippy, Physical Game

10 observations: Hawks lose in chippy game vs. Flyers originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago The Blackhawks fell to the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday. Here are 10 observations from the loss: 1. The Blackhawks have not won a regular-season game in Philadelphia since Nov. 9, 1996. They are now 0-15-1 over that stretch. According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, interim head coach Derek King mentioned that stat in his pregame speech and jokingly reminded his team that he was playing in the league that year. That’s how long it’s been. 2. This game was oddly chippy between two teams that don’t often see each other. They combined for 60 hits (Chicago had 33, Philadelphia had 27) and 26 penalty minutes (Chicago had 18, Philadelphia had 10). Three penalties were assessed after Cam Atkinson’s goal alone to make it 2-2 because a scrum ensued and eight of the penalties came in the third period, where things went off the rails. 3. Kevin Connauton left the game in the third period after taking a high hit from Kirby Dach and it obviously drew a big reaction because no penalty was called. Here’s how I saw it: Dach is preparing to line up Connauton when he’s standing straight up but his body angle changes once the puck is released, and it looked like Connauton made things worse for himself by trying to duck out of the way. It’s an unfortunate outcome that the NHL’s Department of Player Safety will surely review, but I’m not sure anything major will come out of it.  Here’s a look at the Kirby Dach hit on Kevin Connauton. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/BS4waBbzlZ— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) March 5, 2022 4. This play should also be reviewed by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety. In one of the many third-period scrums, Travis Sanheim tried elbowing a helmet-less Alex DeBrincat’s head onto the ice. Sanheim is lucky DeBrincat wasn’t seriously injured, but it shouldn’t take an injury to warrant further discipline on a play like that. Dangerous. They had only three shots on goal in the first 14-plus minutes of action and fell behind 1-0 when Oskar Lindblom redirected Sanheim’s shot from the point at the 4:46 mark. It was just the 14th time this season the Flyers held a lead after one period. 6. Dylan Strome, who lost his man on the Flyers’ first goal, redeemed himself by finding the back of the net twice, which ended a seven-game goal drought. He also finished with six shots on goal to match his season-high after having nine shots on goal in his previous seven contests. 7. I counted at least two blatant missed calls that went against the Blackhawks, who didn’t have a single power play in the first two periods and finished with only one in a game that had 13 penalties. Dominik Kubalik got whacked in the face by Justin Braun midway through the first period that eventually led to a 2-on-1 rush chance for the Flyers, and then Patrick Kane was tripped by Sanheim in the later stages of the second period shortly before the Flyers tied it up at 2-2. 8. Kevin Lankinen hasn’t been able to get into a rhythm this season for various reasons, most of which have been outside his control. He needs a confidence-building outing soon. 9. DeBrincat scored his 31st goal of the season but Jonathan Toews made the play happen by winning the draw in a nifty. He kicked the puck back with this right skate and seconds later the puck was in the back of the net. Great shot by Alex DeBrincat but check out this nifty faceoff win by Jonathan Toews. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/gQvzv5rtq9— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) March 5, 2022 10. The Flyers won just their second game of the season when trailing after two periods. They were 1-23-4 in such situations going into Saturday for a win percentage of .036, which was dead-last in the NHL.  Click here to subscribe to the Blackhawks Talk Podcast for free.
